The first day of the internship was great! As soon as I got there, I was able to observe a media specialist teaching a 7th grade class. She was terrific! This makes me feel good. I know that am in the right type of learning environment.

I have been exposed to so much in one day. I see how many people there are to know in the school!

I have even begun to help students and to use my technology skills by answers questions on the availability of books. I have begun to see how the district's circulation catalog works. It is very simple!

I have also been able to discover valuable books and am learning about situations where things need to be looked at as a whole instead of narrowly. For example, if the books message is important, the book needs to stay!

The students have been very well behaved. But there is a lot to know when working at a school. I know this internship will provide me with the confidence I need to have in order to place myself in that type of setting!

Questions and Criteria for Grading:

Essential Question: How does my knowledge from my Fairfield University library media classes compare to the real world of library media?

What are the similarities and differences between my knowledge of how a library media center operates and the reality of how this library media center operates?
How are the four roles of the library media center different, and which one takes up the majority of time?
How does collaboration in action compare to what I learned about the collaborative process?
What issues in library media are important in the day to day operation of a library media program at the middle school level?
What are some methods of assessing information literacy and how do they fit different teaching strategies?
What is collection development and what policies are there to support it?
What policies are there to deal with challenged materials and what process is implemented when resources are challenged?
What is collaboration?
What is the process for planning and implementing a lesson focusing on information literacy?
How is a library media lesson evaluated?
What unexpected outcomes resulted from my internship?
What issues in library media are important in the day to day operation of a library media program at the middle school level?

An issue raised today is regarding the environment of the media center. The restructuring of the center has been accomplished by moving some some shelves as well as plans to paint and change the carpeting arrangement.

I can relate this move to be a good one from research I have done in educational psychology in my research on morals. In that, we recognized the importance that educators take in making an environment that is aestically pleasing for the students and so they do not have to work in a "dump".

Refer to the book, "The students are watching : schools and the moral contract" By Theodore R. Sizer, Nancy Faust Sizer

What is the district's circulation system. Hopefully you will get an opportunity to go "backstage" and view the reports, cataloging and editing of MARC records. Depending on the system, there should be a way for students to create bookbags, and it is important to find out if the library automation system stores bookbags. (Unlikely, so you have to figure out a way for students to create a bookbag that they can access at any time which saves the books they are interested in reading.)
I'm glad your first day was so successful.
